Feed Frenzie

I set up my Bloglines account, choose some options and now have a plethora of feeds based on my interests. Some look good, could even be useful, but I think that some weeding is in order. I'm not finding the appeal of this feature. What am I missing?

I've come to the conclusion that straight RSS feeds - those from a single organization such as SOLS - are a quick way to keep on top of new things without having to go to the site. Basically a shortcut that may save a little time, but which doesn't really do anything beyond that. A good library application of this function of RSS feeds would be to have a feed that tracks new acquisitions for patrons.
THe more compelling use of RSS feeds is embodied in the aggregate feeds that synchronize content from a number of sources. A really fun one is found at http://buzz.stumbleupon.com/ . It is a place where the content is odds and ends that have grabbed the interest of 'stumblers'(anybody and everybody). An RSS feed to this is a quick distraction that always has something of interest. A library application would be something we talked about at staff meeting - a patron that constantly takes out archeology books could have an RSS feed that let him know when new books in his area of interest had been purchased.

I agree with Patti. RSS feeds are so much easier than logging onto Bloglines and being bombarded by postings!
